THERAPY FOR CHILDREN, TEENS, & PARENTING
Helping children, teens, and parents feel calm, connected, and understood.
You want to see your child excel to their fullest potential.
One of the hardest things for a parent to do is to watch their own child or teen struggle. Kids often experience difficulties in the classroom, in their peer relationships or just going through the daily obstacles of middle school or high school. These challenges often create feelings of anxiety or depression, sadness, and even anger, causing them to act out. Parents often struggle with how to connect and communicate effectively to help their child or teen. Therapy for kids, teens, and parents can offer support. With the right help, your child or teen can improve their ability to communicate effectively, they can learn to self-regulate their feelings and grow into the person they want to be. Therapy can help you as the parent, feel confident that you can support them along their journey.
It can feel overwhelming for parents as they try to support their struggling child and work with that child’s school system, all while trying to understand their own feelings and meet the needs of other family members. Your therapist at Cairn Wellness Center is there to not only support your child but also to help you as the parent and your other children and family members develop and strengthen skills and tools to communicate and live in harmony. Our team strives to walk with your child or teen, you as the parents, or the entire family, based on the needs of the family.
We can help with:
Teaching kids and teens coping skills to manage their big emotions
Cultivating social and emotional skills for kids and teens
Empowering teens to get to know themselves better and develop healthy habits
Exploring parenting styles to support your kids as they develop to become good adults
Strengthening the family relationships between parents and siblings
Building communication skills among each member of the family
In therapy, parents can form a clear understanding of the developmental stages their child or teenager is experiencing. This can lead to specific ways that they can give support to help them be successful. With therapy, children and teenagers can learn how to recognize and express their feelings while at home and in school. They can develop coping skills that aid them in managing those feelings. Through therapy, both the parents and the children or teenagers will learn to work together through difficult and challenging experiences, which can lead to a happier, healthier family life.
how WE can help
Create a more stable environment for the entire family.
Our therapists at CWC want to offer help to your child whether their struggle is at home, at school, or life in general. After establishing a therapeutic relationship, CWC therapists work with your child to better understand the feelings and experiences they are going through. We will help them learn to identify and manage difficult emotions so they can develop new strategies to self-regulate and deal with stress. Working with your child through caring, creative, age-appropriate methods including play and talk therapies, will help them feel safe and free to open up and share in the specific way they need, including guiding you to additional resources within your community.
We also recognize teens’ struggles are different as they tend to withdraw and isolate and struggle to control their anxiety as they deal with relationships, school responsibilities, friend drama, and navigating who they want to be. Teen years are especially hard as they desire more independence and often as parents, we develop fear to let them go.
You might be feeling like you're going around and around having the same arguments with your teen. Teens often feel that parents just aren't listening or understanding. Teens feel disconnected from their families and more connected with their friends. Therapy will give your teen a safe space to sort through these changes and help them understand what they are feeling and why.
At Cairn Wellness Center, our therapists will first build a trusting relationship with your teen, leaving them feeling heard, validated, and understood. then collaborate with the teen and parents to determine goals and work on communication. Together we will develop new skills for interacting with others and learn new, healthier ways to navigate challenges.

Common questions about therapy for children, teens, & parents.
-
You will be required to be at the first session to meet with the clinician, review informed consent, and clarify what your hopes are for your child or teen’s therapy. We intentionally design treatment to your specific needs, incorporating both the child(ren) and parent(s) in the process. When applicable, parents can play a significant role in helping their child or teen improve. Therefore, depending on your particular situation, parents may be attending every session or on an as-needed basis. If you have a preference in how much you are involved, set up a consultation to discuss with your therapist.

The legal limits to confidentiality apply to all clients and are explained thoroughly with you in our informed consent. Clients under 18 years of age, who are not emancipated, and their parents, should be aware that the law may allow parents to examine their child's treatment records. Because privacy in psychotherapy is often crucial to successful progress, particularly with teenagers, it is Cairn Wellness Center, LLC's policy to request an agreement from parents that they consent to give up their access to their child's records. Your therapist will provide parents/legal guardians with general information about the progress of the child's treatment, and his/her attendance at scheduled sessions. At your request, and with the child's knowledge, Cairn therapists will provide parents with a summary of your child's treatment when it is complete. Any other communication will require the child's authorization unless your therapist has reason to believe the child is in danger or is a danger to someone else, in which case your therapist will notify the parents of their concern. Before giving parents any information, your therapist will discuss the matter with the child, if possible, and do their best to handle any objections he/she may have. Your therapist will do their best to guide the child in disclosing any needed information directly to the parent. If you have questions or need clarification on this policy, please do not hesitate to discuss it with your therapist during your consultation call or intake session.
